Modern Heirlooms

Every Heirloom Has A Story. It Just Might Begin With You.

Heirlooms provoke memories. They incite nostalgia. They whisper, “there’s a story here.”
An heirloom becomes an heirloom the moment it is passed on, when the intention of a memory or the spirit of a moment transfers from one person to another. Most commonly we think of heirlooms as being passed down between family generations, but not always. Sometimes we have heirlooms that have been in the family for years. Other times, the heirloom begins with us.
As we approach the holiday season, this year, more than ever, feels like a year to honor sentiment and give gifts with intent. To start traditions that have been twirling around in the backs of our minds. To take the time to stop and say, I care about you. You are important to me.
Heirlooms are a way to share that intention, to spread that love with purpose and sentiment. For some, heirlooms come from grandparents’ luxurious linens or estate silver. For others, stories are carried inside the worn lip of a wooden spoon, in the tin-tin sounds of a seasoned Dutch oven, in the glow of an old lamp, rewired and shaded to turn back time 100 years.
As we continue to selectively curate our Barn Market, we carefully seek handcrafted pieces that are ripe with potential stories. Our responsibly made home goods are made to stand the test of time. We see them becoming the heirlooms that ground a holiday tablescape, defining it and inspiring the surrounding layers.
But how to begin? Starting an heirloom tradition for family or friends begins with introspection about the type of memories or intention you want to pass on. Are you a cook who wants to pass on shared memories of breaking bread together or whispers of secret family recipes? Wooden cutting boards will bear the brunt of hours spent chopping and chatting in the kitchen.
Does a friend get excited about setting a memorable table? Hand-blown clear glass bottles and drinking glasses provide a neutral yet elevated presence upon which to build out any themed table design.
Does your loved one relish after dinner drinks near a glowing fire? Perhaps a handmade log carrier, hewn from fallen Ash trees near Star Bright Farm, becomes a staple at the hearth.
What to pass on to the kids? Fine dining etiquette and table manners aren’t getting their normal workouts this year due to COVID. But at home, teaching children to line their laps with real linen napkins could instill a sense of formality at the dinner table and send the signal that our time gathered here together is important.
This holiday season, we invite you to plant the seeds for new memories by gifting a modern heirloom from our Barn Market. Visit us in person or shop online.
We wish you sweet memory-making, from our family to yours.
